The Challenge
This new build in Lawnton, QLD, presented a working family with the opportunity to set up their home for long-term energy efficiency and cost savings from the outset. With typical electricity usage expected for a family, they were keen to keep utility costs at a minimum given the rising cost of power in Queensland.
Future-proofing the home was a priority, not only for financial savings but also for an anticipated increase in energy consumption as the family grows and EVs are added to the mix. A key requirement was the ability to self-consume as much of their solar energy as possible, including during the evenings when the family is most active at home.
To achieve this, they needed a reliable solar and battery solution that would reduce their reliance on the grid, cover their evening electricity demands, and help maximise energy independence.
Why Sungrow Solar and Battery System?
After discussing their goals with Springers Solar, our team selected a Sungrow hybrid solar and battery system for the home. We considered several options, including AC-coupled batteries and hybrid setups like Tesla Powerwall and SolarEdge, but Sungrow stood out for its competitive quality and high-performing components. Sungrow is also compatible with three-phase properties and can deliver backup to all three phases simultaneously. This provides the home ample protection in the event of a grid power outage.
This Sungrow hybrid setup will allow the family to maximise their solar self-consumption while reducing electricity costs, especially during peak usage times (4pm - 9pm). It offers a scalable solution, whereby the owner can increase the battery storage capacity or the solar array in the future if required.

System Design
We designed and installed a 15.4kW Canadian Solar array for the roof, comprising 35 x 440W N-Type TOPCon modules. This setup provides ample generation capacity to power the home and charge the battery system during daylight hours.
We selected a 15kW three-phase Sungrow hybrid inverter, allowing efficient energy conversion and grid interaction.
To meet the family’s need for energy in the evenings, a 30kWh Sungrow battery solution was selected. This includes 5x Sungrow 5kWh LFP battery modules, which can easily be scaled in the future should their energy requirements increase.
System Performance and Monitoring
During the planning phase of this project, our in-house energy consultants conservatively estimated the system’s performance, particularly focusing on the ability to power evening loads from stored energy. Our forecasts can break down estimated production month by month to provide a clear understanding of how the system will perform.
By bringing up the system on the Sungrow monitoring platform, iSolarCloud, the family can view real-time data and track their energy generation and usage. Even during winter, the system’s performance has exceeded expectations, with the solar array producing over 63kWh of electricity in August even though we estimated only 47kWh.
